In this book the word "ideal" means a gospel standard. As such, an ideal becomes "a way to perfection," "that which inspires and directs," "something great and splendid we wish to attain." From the viewpoint of the Latter-day Saint principle of eternal progress, an ideal is always "the better beyond the best."
In his 1955 Sunday School manual called "Christ's Ideals for Living,” Obert C. Tanner details the importance of such gospel standards in our individual lives. Ideals are inevitable, necessary and powerful. They are selective, attainable and saving. The ideals of Christ stand supreme and help us to measure our progress in mortality.

As an inactive member of the Mormon church, it was very interesting reading this book. It has reminded me of what the church was like all those decades ago. Today it seems like a very different organization. This book brought a breath of fresh air and deep nostalgia to my heart. Whether or not a person believes as a Mormon does, this book presents ideals (in the deepest definition of that word) from Christ's teachings. These are expanded upon by many, many quotes from leaders of the church, along with illuminating quotes from many sources that are not Mormon in origin. Non-Mormons could find this book to be a way of understanding what the Church believes in depth about Jesus and what the finest principles are. Current members of the Church will be enlightened in the way it officially expressed itself several decades ago, especially by so extensively quoting outside sources. Personally I am glad I found this book and was able to read it again and be reminded of how the Church used to be.Product details

I received this book from my parents' collection, and they obviously used it when they were active in the LDS church. I do not currently attend the church, but have very much enjoyed this book. Although written in the 1950s, the ideals for living presented herein are timeless for Christians, and they still hold great value in application to how I want to live my life. Why limit yourself to one church's writings? I believe we can learn much from many of the different practices of Christianity. The chapters are easy to read, not too wordy, and I find they are often a catalyst in me wanting to make changes in my life and in my behavior for the better.

It is one of the greatest books next to the scriptures, which it is filled with to back up it's teachings.

Best Sunday School manual of all time. The church curriculum of present does not even hold a candle to this excellent book. Brilliant insight in every chapter by OC Tanner and all of the various church and non-church related quotes on each "ideal" are intelligent and foster great discussions. I am supplementing with this book heavily in my Gospel Doctrine New Testament classes this year. Actually, that's not true, I only get the reading assignment from the manual and then I turn to this classic book for nearly everything else.
